Hanging Herbs - A shoe-in for success !
Make sure your favorite herbs are close at hand from your local nursery.
All you need is a plastic hanging shoe bag, (available from Home Center in Shilat), a length of hessian (burlap), compost, scissors, a small trowel and potted herbs (used here: dill, chives, marjoram, thyme, parsley, curry plant and sage).
1. Place the shoe bag on a flat surface (if possible, work outside as filling the shoe bag can be messy). Measure the length and witdh of a pocket. Double the length measurement and add 14cm. Add 10cm to the width measurement. Cut the hessian to this size. Fold the hessian in half widthwise, turn in the excess down both sides and then slide, fold first, into the pocket.
2. Fold back the excess hessian at the top of the pocket and add just enough compost to the base of the lined pocket for the plant to rest on. Remove the plant from its pot and place in the pocket. Add more compost, making sure that the plant is firmly bedded in.
3. Trim the excess hessian. Plant up each pocket in the same way, then water lightly. Hang the shoe bag where it will get plenty of natural light. Do not over-water.
