Turn the tiniest plot of soil into a strawberry mine! Grow low-maintenance, productive strawberries in a garden bed, in a container--even as a pretty groundcover. They'll quickly reward you with ripe, juicy berries to eat fresh from the garden.
Strawberry savvy:
Strawberries grow best in moist, well-drained soil in full sun.
"Ever-bearing" varieties bear fruit the same season that they're planted.
"June-bearing" varieties form strong plants the year they're planted, then bear fruit the next year.
Expect a quart of fruit from each plant.
Grow strawberries in a jar!
Poke small plants into these terra cotta pots with pockets, and soon youll have chubby, cheerful pots producing loads of strawberries.
What you'll need:
strawberry jars
potting soil
6 strawberry plants per jar
trowel
Heres how:
Plant the pockets first. Add potting soil up to first pocket; then gently poke a berry plant into the pocketroots first, of course. Continue to plant the other pockets. Top off the jar by filling it with more potting soil, then plant the remaining strawberries in the top of the pot. Water well.
Strawberry jar care:
Use a well-drained potting soil mixture, high in moisture-retentive sphagnum peat moss content. Start with small plants. They need to fit easily into the pockets of the strawberry jar. Be sure to water your strawberry jar every day. The open pockets and absorbent nature of terra cotta mean that your jar will dry out quickly and you'll need to water regularly.
