Now that we have our color schemes and have selected colors we're done right? Not
exactly, there are some general rules you can use on where to apply the color for highest effectiveness in the overall decorating scheme.
For small rooms with low ceilings select light colors for the walls, and even lighter colors for the floors and ceilings to make the room appear larger. Keep furniture and accessories within the same light color scheme, or at least patterns with light-colored backgrounds.
For regular sized rooms with moderate ceilings, apply the darkest color scheme to the floor, with medium colors on the walls and lightest color on the ceilings.
To make a room warmer, use dark flooring, and medium color walls, with darker furniture and accessories.
For oversized rooms, select small sections for dramatic colors to add excitement, and divide the room into logical sections with the more subtle palette.
For rooms that are narrow that you want to appear wider, apply light colors to the longer walls and darker colors to the shorter walls.
For square rooms, to make them seem less symmetrical, paint a the focal point wall a different color.
For low ceilings, use white paint or extend the walls with the same color onto the ceiling. Use similar lightness in the flooring.
For high ceilings that you want to minimize, apply darker colors such as brown or midnight blue to the ceiling to reduce the scale and provide warmth, and cut the walls down to size by dividing them into two or more horizontal bands of color, perhaps using a chair rail.
For architectural elements you wish to highlight such as a door or exciting moldings, select high contrast dark walls with light moldings, or light walls with dark moldings to make these elements stand out.
For rooms with too many windows and doors, or unattractive trim, paint the trim, window and door the same color as the walls. This technique makes the features less noticeable.

![](images/spacer.gif) In general, have fun and be creative with your color selections, however remember that your walls and ceilings are the base for the rest of your decorating. We recommend that you employ basic neutral colors or subtle tones to the overall walls, ceiling, and flooring, adding vibrant splashes of color on smaller walls, furniture, and accents. This way you can vary the mood with accents, texture, and pattern while maintaining a solid neutral base. If you are still having trouble selecting the color, send us a note and we'll be happy to help you with your personal choice!
